Week 4 Cliff Notes: Heeling and Approach by a Stranger

Do note that there are slight variations in how Apprentice Deb Kidwell, myself as Instructor, and Apprentice Stephanie approach this 'touch' sequencing for the Approach by a Stranger Exercise. All are correct as each training approach is literally based on the dog you are training.

  2. I want to make this comment, we will work on approach my a stranger. I don't want a stranger to come up to me or Cosmo and touch or pet him, it is just me and Cosmo and I feel like he is my protector, I want him to alert me if someone is coming up behind me. We walk a lot and I want to feel safe. I will work with Trina on this step.

  3. Karen,

There is a difference between a dog 'alerting' and 'self-control'. The Approach by a Stranger is a take on the AKC Obedience Ring Trials such as Beginner Novice, Novice and into the advanced classes of Utility. This exercise is critical for Cosmos to learn self-control as he is not your protector, rather, you are HIS protector AKA leader. This exercise is structured so a dog is correctly and appropriately approached by a Stranger, while maintaining self-control, as the dog yields to YOUR leadership. Does this make sense?
